Once again E3 has struck a chord with gamers across all platforms with the new and upcoming release of Super Mario Smash Bros-Ultimate! I remember playing Super Mario 64 with my grandfather when I was a boy and it brought back a lot of the excitement and passion I had for the game as I watched the release.
So to start it off we have a couple of new characters to go along with our more veteran playable characters. 1st to have been released as a new character is yours truly, Princess Daisy, hailing for the Gameboy era Super Mario Land. Next up to bat a character most we’re definitely not expecting, Inkling! For those who don’t know the background of this specific character: Inklings originate from Splatoon and were created by Nintendo back in 2015. Now the interesting thing about Inklings is that they possess the ability to transform into an octopus and then back into a more humanoid
figure. It will be very interesting to see how they incorporate such unusual abilities into this new version.
Lastly, but not least we introduce Ridley, although he is not new to the franchise he is indeed new to being playable. Ridley first appears in Metroid as the main villain, but also makes appearances in Super Mario Bros: Brawl as one of the games bosses to be defeated. With his regenerative ability it will be exciting to see how fellow players react to how stubborn a foe he can be to take down. So far all three selections bring about new possibilities and character abilities that beg for more to come!
Now to continue on, not only have they added new playable characters, they have also added new stages for players to compete on. Drawing from various sources throughout the franchise we see a multitude of new strategies to be use on each stage. Of course with a new character coming from Splatoon, they had to incorporate a new stage based off the games as well. In Moray Towers you enter on the top of a skyscraper set in Splatoon. While the visuals are amazing, it is indeed the level of precision a gamer will need to surpass the obstacles (let alone opponents) will have to be critically timed. While it may not look like much, you are met by a series of slated platforms which if not used correctly could spell an easy victory for your opponent. Many fans of the franchise and various series will also notice two more new additions that could be considered classics as well; one being the stage called New Donk City and the second being the Great Plateau Tower of course coming straight from The Legends of Zelda: The Breath of the Wild. Certainly we will enjoy the classical stages, but with the edition of new stages we will be able to experience a whole different skill set and visuals!
Finally to finish we hit almost everyone’s favorite part about smashing your opponents, and I am of course talking about Items. With new additions such as the Banana Gun, Black Hole, Bomber, and Healing Field, we can only imagine what else they are going to come up with. As they have not released any data on those items, we must simply use our imaginations and focus on the ones that they have released information on! So far they have released the Launch Star and Fake Smash Ball. Now the latter is easily determined to be self describable as ruse of a real Smash Ball, to
trick and confound your opponents. The Launch Star has indeed been seen before and while we can assume it will do the same, no one can so for now until it is released!
While it has been a definite pleasure researching and hunting down everything that has been released, a lot of new things have been named for certain. No information has been given on specifics as to what they will do. With that being said I am excited, and in anticipation the day I can pick up my very own copy of the game to enjoy both past additions and all new additions as well!
*Editor’s note: New information has been released by Nintendo, that this title will be available exclusively to the Nintendo Switch on December 7th, 2018!*
