I’ve been in Xiled Gaming Network for 4 going on 5 years now. I’ve spent my fair share of time in Clan Operations, as well as being Squad Leadership, and even in Division Staff. What I never had to worry about because I was 22 when I joined, was Junior squads. Junior Squads weren’t common when I first joined, and even up until a couple years ago they were few and far between.
A thought that I have always had however, if being a General of a 15+ squad wasn’t too bad what is it like being a General of a Junior Squad where your members are 12-14? Would it basically be like babysitting your younger siblings, making sure they are having fun but not fighting?
Well, I wanted to know what it was really like to run a Junior Squad. So I had the chance to talk to XGN Ellie last night. The current Major, soon to be General, of Badger DoD. She was awesome in talking to me and giving me the real feel of what it takes to lead these members.
So I guess the first question would be, is how long have you been involved in your squad?
Ellie- “Well I have been over here in Badger DoD for about 4 days. I was told I could come over here with my past knowledge as a general of a junior squad to help Badger as much as possible.”
What Junior squad were you a General in before?
Ellie – “Leopard DoD.”
What is it like being in Senior Leadership of a Junior squad? Do you think it’s harder than being Leadership of a 15+ squad?
Ellie- “Senior Leadership in a junior squad is nice. I enjoy seeing these young leaders come up in such an astonishing way. I wouldn’t say that running a junior squad is harder than an adult squad, just you have to look at things from a different perspective. You have to look at the juniors with more patience and a level head. These young adults are really going to be able to look back on their XGN days sometime and think to themselves that the leadership skills we teach them have brought them far.”
With a junior squad is it a one game dedicated squad or is it hybrid? Because of age do you need to stay away from certain games like ones with M 18+ ratings?
Ellie- “I mean, with both of the junior squads I have ran, almost all of them enjoyed playing Fortnite. But a lot of us are very diverse when it comes to gaming. Some like Call of Duty, and some only play Roblox. So it really depends. I do not believe I have ever had a Jr. member have to get off of a game that was M 18+.”
What would you say is the toughest part about leading a Junior squad?
Ellie- “I would definitely have to say the times. With all the members in school, with homework and all that stuff it’s very hard to schedule meetings around those times that work for everyone. But it is very beneficial to me just seeing these members whole attitudes change when they get promoted or when they meet new friends. It’s the best job in Xiled Gaming Network I could have ever asked for”
Since it is tough with everyone’s time frames do you still have set times for meetings, or do they vary?
Ellie- “No, we have set times for squad meetings. Sometimes we just have to catch a member up on what happened if they missed the meeting.”
Ahh I see. Do you think it is much easier to recruit for Junior squads?
Ellie- “Honestly no. I think 15+ squads are much easier to recruit off of just because there are so many different age groups that could be recruited. For example, a 18 year old could be recruiting a 56 year old. So in my opinion, there are just way more opportunities to recruit in adult squads as opposed to junior where unless you’re GEN, you have to be 12 – 14.”
Now what is the process that actually happens when someone turns 15 while they are in the Junior squad? Do they get to keep their rank when they are moved?
Ellie- “Well, they get to choose which squad they go to within the division. So if the rank is available in the squad they choose, they will keep their rank. If it is not, they will be moved down to the next available rank.”
What is the best advice you can give to members who are about to be come squad Senior Leadership (MAJ-GEN), and to members who will move up to Squad Leadership in the future?
Ellie – “Honestly, you might look at some of these kids as “squeakers”, but if you give them respect, they will give it back. They all have amazing personalities that will totally amaze you. If you’re looking to move up to Senior Officer Staff in a junior squad, just keep that level-headed attitude.”
Ok legit last question, what goals do you have for Badger in the future? What goals do you have for yourself?
Ellie- “Well I would honestly love to see Badger just becoming the top Junior Squad XGN has ever seen! I want to see all of Badger’s members be interested in moving up and eventually splitting. That is my goal for my squad. My goal for myself would have to be to split this squad, become COFO, and just keep watching both of the squads grow and strive. I love my junior members with all my heart!”
A huge thank you to Ellie for letting me pick her brain last night and giving me a little closer look at Junior Squads. I look forward to hearing great things come from Badger DoD in the future. To all members who are currently in Junior Squads, keep up all of your hard work & keep following your goals!
