* Dedicate, Congregate, Educate, Dominate *
Since the dawn of servers and lans, gaming groups have organized. As games grew more complex, team-based play became more advanced, and gaming communities formalized. Some of these communities were casual, while others grew competitive, forming the origin of what is now known as professional gaming.
Xiled Gaming Network is, in many ways, a third generation of original gaming. It’s family tree dates back to the early days of Halo 2 on Xbox. Clans in Halo 2 were groups of up to 100 members who were eligible to compete together in match made games against teams from other clans. Competition was fierce; earning even a modest ranking was an accomplishment. Gradually gamers with KSI at the beginning of the gamer tags began to appear in clan-matches, as it turns out, Killing Service Incorporated(KSI) was the original sponsored clan. It’s membership was divided into two groups; Professional and recreational. KSI applied basic rules, organizational structure, rank structure, and acquired sponsors for it’s professional gamers.
The Era of Xiled
As KSI developed, flaws in it’s structure became apparent to some of it’s leaders. High-ranking officers were ignored, as were rules forbidding cheating, and disrespect. KSI had a single leader, which meant that decisions were unilateral. As time passed, the organization saw it’s own problems grow rapidly. Members grew dissatisfied with the clumsy structure and bureaucracy. Communication between leadership ranks were poor and worsening. Some divisions became plagued with melodrama and power struggles, others fell into inactivity, and despair. Due to the lack of communication, those responsible for the worsening divisions were not held accountable for their mismanaging, and standards fell throughout the organization.
A Secret is Born
To some, this was not acceptable, while individual clan leaders couldn’t enforce standards in every corner of KSI, they could certainly do so within their own corners. As underground organization of these standards-based clans formed and dubbed themselves Xiled Gaming Network. Using the premise that each division was a self-sustaining community, a plan was devised to make KSI a pure community and insure the leadership that gets promoted will lead KSI into a new generation. Using the shadows to change KSI to fit what they wanted, with the help of XGN Task force leader, and the KSI chief of Staff, KSI Fame 7, who would later become known as “Mr. XGN,” they started to spread to every corner of the community. Insuring that every division leader was part of the secret society XGN, and with this amount of power, they could change the old clan and make it better. The plan was simple; take the structure, institutions, and policies that made these XGN divisions the best, and remove the leadership baggage. The divisions became more adaptable, Standards would be maintained, and members would know the real value of their membership. As time passed, leaders began conceiving a better organized community that offered more to it’s members; institutions to teach new gamers, event planning boards to encourage friendly tournaments, other community activities and a reference handbook to help guide leaders and ensure quality in every division. Membership would have it’s privileges.
A Breach of Faith
One commander in the developing organization was dissatisfied with her role. She didn’t like the standards and felt her leadership exceeded her authority. She pleaded with her superior to grant her additional power in her clan, despite not having fulfilled the standard requirements to earn that power. After weeks of begging and being denied absolute control of her division, weeks of hearing how she wasn’t ready, she’d had enough.
Whisperings of XGN had surfaced in the preceding weeks, bit with the testimony and evidence provided by the disgruntled commander, the leaders of the parent organization decided they’d had enough. The leader overseeing the XGN divisions was brought in and interrogated through the night, he expressed the issues that had festered but his concerns about poor oversight and counterproductive policies fell on deaf ears. They saw it differently, and called him a traitor, saying that he was planning to destroy KSI, and was forming a council. KSI Fame 7 (Mr. XGN) didn’t give up trying to explain what he was trying to do, and why it should be done, but the leaders ignored their fellow board member. With sunrise only a few hours away, he was removed from his position as KSI chief of staff and co-creator. The night was quiet, but anarchy was on the horizon.
The Seventh of July
The next morning was a flurry of action, much to the surprise of the old leadership, nearly every division that had pledged itself to XGN and Mr. XGN, XGN Damaged 7, XGN Sandman 7, XGN Legacy 7, XGN Tiesto 7 and two others began to defect. Whole divisions were disappearing from the parent organization, KSI, and as the old leaders began their inquires, they were met with impish pranks and hostility. On July 7, 2010, XGN had emerged from the shadows and planted it’s feet squarely on the ground. The magnitude of this defect was becoming apparent to the older leaders, and panic set in. In desperation, lower ranking leaders were ordered to infiltrate as many of the defecting divisions as possible under the pretense of helping members who wished to remain in the old organization. Once given the power, they were to remove every person from the KSI divisions, three divisions, Double Helix, The fame, and Xiled Kingz, were hit; a move the KSI leaders quickly began to regret. Members that had questioned their loyalties had become resolute, there was evidence that they had heard of. The ranks of XGN filled as communities reunited. Many new XGN leaders would cite this day among their most satisfying gaming memories. Within one week, XGN had gained more than 500 members.
